Beginners

If you are a beginner, as a club we advise this:

Come up to the site and talk to us before you part with any cash, you will receive free impartial advice that we are happy to give.  Unfortunately we still see beginners come up to the site with unsuitable models that have been sold to them by a model shop wanting a quick sale.

"Your best route into this hobby is to join a club and pick the right model for you".

Joining a club is invaluable to gain experience quickly and fly with a buddy box setup that really provides the safest training environment.

So what is the right model for you ? A simple trainer with a 40 size engine in it and a minimum of a four channel radio will enable you to progress quickly and reliably setting you up for your next model. It is possible to train on a Junior 60 or a very docile glider, and this will provide some success but your jump onto subsequent models will be greater.

This setup will enable you to fly in slightly windy conditions more comfortably than an electric model. Some of our more recent members have taken the route of supplementing this with an electric model. We as a club allow electric flying without passing the BMFA A test (‡), this allows the beginner to clock up a great deal of flying time such that the A test can be taken in a sensible time with the glow powered model.

Becoming a member of the club will also include you in the BMFA insurance scheme that protects for third party damages.

We train all ages, and levels of experience, and can accommodate both Mode 1 and 2 pilots and generally their will be somebody available on a Sunday daytime to help you out.

There are copies of the BMFA booklet , UP and AWAY  in the clubhouse and any new member can have a copy of this. This publication gives simple advice as to the basic flight of the aircraft and the intended learning route culminating in passing the A test. This gives a structure to instructor and trainee, avoiding flying around aimlessly as can very easily be the case.

(‡) The Club Constitution states that only electric models powered with, or less than 8 Ni-Cad or Ni-Mh cells, or 2 Lithium cells can be flown solo without passing either the Silent Flight or Fixed Wing BMFA "A"  Test.
